Hit US comedy New Girl will return to British screens this summer on Channel 4.

The show, which stars Zooey Deschanel as quirky school teacher Jess Day, adjusting to living with three male roommates, began its UK broadcast on 6 January 2012 on Channel 4.

It was put on hiatus after 11 episodes, with the last new instalment of the comedy broadcast by Channel 4 on 16 March. Meanwhile, the remainder of the series has played out on Fox in the US, leaving fans in the UK asking when they’ll get to see the second half of the first series.

Well, very soon, it seems…

“The break was to allow for additional C4 content to premiere,” a Channel 4 spokesperson told RadioTimes.com. “We’re obviously keen to ensure fans enjoy a full and unbroken run when the series returns in the summer.”

It is understood that New Girl will make a June or July return, and Channel 4 are promising more specific details soon.

And there’s another piece of good news for New Girl fans – a second season of the show has been commissioned by Fox for autumn 2012.

However, whether it will air on Channel 4 in the UK (and if it is, whether it will be shown in one complete run) has yet to be revealed.

Rachel McAdams is in negotiations to star in About Time, the latest romantic comedy from British filmmaker Richard Curtis.

Curtis, who wrote and directed Love Actually and penned Bridget Jones’s Diary, wrote the About Time script and is directing. The story is described as a fantastical feel-good movie about a man and his ability to travel back in time. He eventually meets the girl of his dreams. Domhnall Gleeson, son of actor Brendan Gleeson, will play the male lead. Bill Nighy, Tom Hollander, Margot Robbie, Lydia Wilson and Vanessa Kirby are set to co-star.

McAdams would play the dream girl, a role Zooey Deschanel had once been attached to play. Production is set to begin in London in June. Working Title’s Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, Liza Chasin and Amelia Granger are producing.

In 1976, Coal Miner’s Daughter, country star Loretta Lynn’s autobiography (written with journalist George Vescey) became a New York Times Bestseller; in 1980 the book was made into an Academy Award-winning film starring Sissy Spacek and Tommy Lee Jones. Now, it’s headed for Broadway, with actress Zooey Deschanel playing Loretta Lynn.

The announcement came on the stage of the historic Ryman Auditorium during Opry Country Classics Thursday night. Following the announcement, Ms. Deschanel joined the country music icon onstage for a duet of “Coal Miner’s Daughter.”

The onstage announcement and performance mirrored the 1979 Grand Ole Opry appearance where Ms. Lynn invited a young Sissy Spacek onstage to announce that she had chosen the actress to portray her in the forthcoming film. Ms. Spacek went on to win the Academy Award for her performance.

“It’s a long way from Butcher Holler to Broadway in New York City. I never imagined I’d see Coal Miner’s Daughter on a movie screen, and now I can’t believe it’s going to be on a stage for people to see,” says Ms. Lynn. “I’m going to be right there in the front row. And I know Zooey is going to be great – she sings and writes her own songs just like I do, and we even have the same color eyes!”

“Loretta Lynn and her music have been inspirations for me for as long as I can remember,” said Ms. Deschanel. “She is a true legend and to be chosen to play such an iconic woman is a dream come true.”

Coal Miner’s Daughter will be brought to the stage by Fox Theatricals (Kristin Caskey and Mike Isaacson) and Scott Sanders Productions, which have collectively brought some of the biggest hits to the stage, including Legally Blonde, The Color Purple, Red, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Death of a Salesman with Brian Dennehy, Elaine Stritch: At Liberty, and the current revival of Evita starring Ricky Martin.

The creative team and dates for the production will be announced in the coming months. The schedule will not conflict with Ms. Deschanel’s current commitment to the hit FOX TV show, “New Girl,” on which she stars and produces.

Zooey Deschanel will play Loretta Lynn in a Broadway-aimed legit adaptation of “Coal Miner’s Daughter.”

Fox Theatricals (“Bring It On”) and Scott Sanders Prods. (“Evita”) will produce the tuner, with a creative team still to be locked in.

Deschanel will play Lynn in the musical that, like the 1980 film that starred Sissy Spacek, recounts the singer’s trajectory from Kentucky poverty to country music star.

Casting was announced from the stage of Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry, with both Lynn and Deschanel present. The event recalled the 1979 perf at which Lynn brought Spacek up onstage to announce that Spacek would portray her in the pic.

The musical’s production timeline hasn’t yet been set. Final sked is not expected to conflict with Deschanel’s involvement in “The New Girl,” the FOX skein in which she stars.
