Zooey Deschanel and Natalie Portman will make guest appearances in a forthcoming ‘The Simpsons’ episode.
The ‘New Girl’ actress will reprise her role as Mary Spuckler – the daughter of Cleetus who Bart Simpson came close to marrying in season 19 – and she will be joined in the same episode by characters voiced by Natalie, Anne Hathaway, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Sarah Silverman.
The quartet will lend their vocal talents to the roles of four of Bart’s former girlfriends when the 10-year-old boy goes on a romantic pilgrimage to visit his former love interests.
‘The Simpsons’ consulting producer Tim Long, who wrote the episode, is quoted by Entertainment Weekly as saying: ‘It was a way to acknowledge that for a 10-year-old boy, Bart has gotten a lot of action.
‘We thought it might be fun to borrow/pay homage to/steal an idea from ‘High Fidelity’ and have him go on a romantic pilgrimage and visit the girls that he dated and try to figure out how the hell he screwed things up with each of them … I don’t want to give away too much, but he realises that maybe there’s something wrong with him after all.’
The ‘Moonshine River’ episode will see Bart briefly meet former flames Gina (Sarah), Darcy (Natalie), Jenny (Anne) and Nikki (Sarah) before learning that Mary (Zooey) has relocated to New York, so he tries to track her down in an attempt to reconcile his relationship with her.
Tim joked: ‘Any resemblance between this episode and ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s is completely coincidental.’
The episode will air in the US this autumn as part of the animated programme’s 24th series, which will also feature vocal cameos by Steve Carell, Fred Armisen and Jennifer Tilly.
That would be awesome for Joe if it does end up happening.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt is developing with an eye to star in Warner Bros.’ remake of Little Shop of Horrors.
Marc Platt, the producer behind Broadway’s Wicked and such films as Wanted and Legally Blonde, is producing the redo, to which Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the playwright behind the Broadway’s Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, is coming on board to write the script. There is no director set.
Little Shop originally was a quirky 1960 movie from Roger Corman that featured a milquetoast florist who discovers success with a human-eating plant. It was turned into an off-Broadway musical, which led to a second movie in 1986, directed by Frank Oz and starring Rick Moranis and Steve Martin.
If the project comes together in an ideal fashion, Gordon-Levitt would play Seymour, the nerdy florist who is forced to feed the beast in order to keep his fame and popularity rising.
Gordon-Levitt, who has developed a following at Warners after key turns in Inception and this summer’s The Dark Knight Rises, is repped by CAA and Jackoway Tyerman.

Why we love Zooey Deschanel
We love Zooey Deschanel because she’s good at combining hot and funny, and we like that in a woman. Plus she can definitely pull off an elf’s outfit. And when a woman looks hot in any form of fancy dress without turning it in to a slutty outfit you know they’re good. Not that they should be discouraged from turning it in to a slutty outfit, mind…
Anyway, Zooey Deschanel was planning on moving in to musical theatre rather than acting because she was a singer during her high school years. These were a-list high school years though, because she named Kate Hudson and Jake Gyllenhaal among her buddies at the time. Her first acting job soon came along instead though, and it was a guest appearance on Veronica’s Closet, which was a sitcom that we like the sound of because it was clearly based on Victoria’s Secret. Well, the name was at least.
After that Zooey Deschanel moved in to films, appearing in stuff such as Almost Famous and The Good Girl before her role in Elf. It took her a few years before she nailed some lead roles, appearing in Yes Man and then (500) Days of Summer, but she’d already started singing in roles. She’d been performing as a singer away from films for a while too, but released her debut album with another guy as a band called ‘She & Him’ in 2008. Some people just aren’t satisfied with earning millions from movies are they? Still, the more we see, the better. And more we will, as Zooey Deschanel is currently starring in New Girl on HBO, where she fires up the cute and quirky to great effect.
